A Nuxalk Nation grandfather, Michael Hood, in Bella Coola, is helping people clear snowy driveways while teaching his 10-year-old grandson to get outside and give back to his community.

Michael Hood, from Bella Coola, B.C., says he loves making his reserve a better place. Using his side-by-side, he has cleared about 10 snowy driveways for people in his community over the past month, doing the work for free. Hood works as a landscaper for the Nuxalk Nation and says he helps because shovelling snow is hard work, especially for those who need extra support. Sometimes people offer a small amount for gas, but he says he never expects payment and just wants to give back. In the process, he is also teaching his 10-year-old grandson the importance of helping others and caring for their community.

Marina Schooner from the Nuxalk Nation was surprised to wake up one morning and find her long driveway completely cleared after weeks of snowfall. Because of a disability, she has not been able to shovel on her own. This was one of many kind acts by Michael Hood, who has been helping people in the community for free when he hears someone needs support. Schooner said the gesture touched her heart and reminded her of how people used to always look out for one another. Hood says he helps anyone who needs it, especially elders. Hood loves helping his people and believes that when you do something good, good things come back to you.
